Ingredients

1 lb ground beef (80/20 blend for juiciness)

1 small onion, thinly sliced

2 tablespoons butter (for grilling)

1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

Salt and pepper, to taste

4 slices of rye bread

4 slices of Swiss cheese (or your choice of cheese)

Optional: 1 tablespoon mayonnaise for a spread

Instructions

Prepare the Onion: In a skillet over medium heat, melt one tablespoon of butter. Add the sliced onion and sauté until they become golden brown and caramelized, about 10-15 minutes. Stir occasionally to ensure even cooking. Once caramelized, set aside.

Form the Patties: In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix gently, being careful not to overwork the meat. Divide the mixture into two equal portions and shape them into patties, slightly larger than the slices of bread, as they will shrink while cooking.

Cook the Patties: In the same skillet used for the onions, add the remaining tablespoon of butter. Heat over medium-high heat. Once hot, place the beef patties in the skillet and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side or until they reach desired doneness. Add Swiss cheese on top of each patty during the last minute of cooking to melt.

Assemble the Patty Melt: Spread mayonnaise on one side of each slice of rye bread (optional). On the unbuttered side of two slices, place one slice of melted cheese-topped patty, followed by a generous amount of caramelized onions, then top with another slice of cheese. Cover with the remaining slices of bread, buttered side up.

Grill the Sandwich: In the same skillet, reduce the heat to medium-low. Carefully place the assembled sandwiches in the skillet. Grill for about 3-4 minutes on each side or until the bread is golden brown and crispy, and the cheese is bubbling.

Serve: Remove from the skillet, slice in half, and serve hot with pickles or a side salad for a delightful meal.
